Thailand Election 2019 Interactive Map, Explained.

On 24 March, 2019, Thailand held the first election in eight years – a vital one, the first after the junta government held its power in 2014. 

Workpoint News introduced a real-time website for election results with a specially designed map that matches the MP seats in each province. It showed real-time results: when a party is poised to win in a constituency, calculated by our system, the area will be filled by each party’s colour.

The website reports the first-5 MP candidates in each constituency as this general election is based on “every vote counts” rule. 

 This website shows real-time numbers of MPs, party-list MPs and total number of MPs nationwide according to election rules under the present Thailand’s Charter which is considered to be one of the most complicated in the history.

There are several ways to calculate the total number of MPs. We designed our website that input a formula following the current constitution, showing our standpoint on how we respect rules and laws in the country.

 The website also reports news related to this general election including pre-and-post Election. 

The general election results in Thailand were originally reported via the Thailand map, but it has a flaw. The image presented does not reflect the true quantity. For example, Mae Hong Sorn province has only 1 member of parliament but has a big space. It makes the image look big, conflicting with the amount of members of parliament. 

Also, the capital city of Bangkok, a size 10 times smaller than Mae Hong Son province, but has more than 30 members of parliament. This then creates an conflicting image. 

Therefore, we made a new map so that it accurately reflects the amount and size ratio. 

The map is consistent with the shape the country, also Bangkok is shown separately but still each district is placed where the real location is.

The design was adapted throughout 3 months after the election. From the news regarding the members of parliament or the establishment of coalition parties to the day of electing the prime minister, we have live upadtes and reports. This results in an audience of more than 280,000 at once and in total more than 6 million views, which is the largest amount compared to other news outlets. 

The data is still stored on the website so everyone can return to check the 2019 election results, which is considered important since it is the first election Thailand has had in 8 years.
